First exhibited at the DCCS Chatsworth Auction, this oil painting was shown alongside the artist’s Chatsworth Housecanvas, which sold for £1,600 to benefit charities including Ashgate Hospice.
The work captures a tender yet rugged moment: the soulful gaze of a black Labrador peering out from the weathered back of a classic Land Rover. Every detail—from the textured patina of the vehicle’s bodywork to the glistening fur and amber eyes of the dog—is rendered with striking realism. The iconic green and yellow Land Roverbadge anchors the composition, celebrating not just a vehicle, but a way of life bound to the British countryside.
A tribute to loyalty, heritage, and the enduring companionship between humans, animals, and the machines that carry them through the landscape, this piece blends nostalgia with storytelling. Rich textures and earthy tones make it a work that resonates as both a portrait and an emblem of rural adventure.
BEHIND THE BRUSH
“Not much thought went into this piece. It was all action. I was asked back to have my art on Auction and Display for the second year only weeks before the date of the Auction. I didn’t have any Paintings for the day. So I had to paint the Chatsworth House Piece for the Auction. I knew i needed a second piece for the day. I wanted to suprise this years crowd with a fresh and unexpected suprise. This piece was the last trick up my sleeve.”
